5th Class Learns About Lungs with Fun Experiment

26th Sep 2023

Our 5th class science lesson this week was all about lungs! We learned how our lungs work to take in oxygen 🌬️ and remove carbon dioxide 🌫️. We also did a fun experiment to test how the diaphragm works alongside the lungs.

To do the experiment, we needed a cut-out water bottle, two balloons, and rubber bands. We stretched one balloon over the hole in the bottom of the water bottle and secured it with a rubber band. Then, we cut a small hole in the top of the water bottle and stretched another balloon over it, securing it with another rubber band.

When we pulled down on the balloon at the bottom of the water bottle, the balloon at the top inflated! 🤯 This is because the balloon at the bottom represents the diaphragm and the balloon at the top represents the lungs. When the diaphragm contracts, it pulls down on the lungs, causing them to expand and air to rush in.

This experiment was a fun way to learn about how our lungs work and how the diaphragm helps us breathe. 😊

Conclusion

Learning about how our lungs work is important because it helps us to understand how to take care of our respiratory health. We can keep our lungs healthy by eating a healthy diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding smoking.
