In our science lesson, we were learning about our lungs. In pairs, we completed an experiment which showed us how our lungs work when we breathe.

Ms Lyons cut the plastic bottles and then we put a small balloon around the neck of the bottle. We cut the neck of a larger balloon off and placed it on the other end of the bottle. It was very important that this was put on properly and we created an airtight seal by using an elastic band to keep the balloon in place.

We discussed our predictions for the experiment and then pulled the balloon upwards. When the balloon was pulled upwards, the smaller balloon inflated and when the balloon was released, the smaller balloon deflated.

When we inhale, oxygen goes into our lungs and when we exhale, carbon dioxide is released.

We wrote the details of our experiment along with a labelled diagram in our science journals.
