Our Junior girls had a great day out at their first ever football blitz! There was great excitement amongst the players, who were all smiles as they donned the St Mary's jerseys for the first time.
Two teams represented St Mary's at the blitz, and both won their respective games against Scoil Bhríde and Líos na nÓg. Most important of all was that the girls got a great opportunity to showcase the skills they have been developing over the past few weeks and had tremendous fun doing so.
The next blitz will involve all the girls who were not present yesterday and is set to take place next Thursday March 28th in Dartry Park @ 2:45pm.
What a fantastic occasion we witnessed on Monday! Our girls' hugely successful season culminated in a well deserved first-ever appearance in Croke Park! While the result on the day didn't go our way it's safe to say that the girls and their strong supporters had a great day out in the home of the GAA!
To play in Croke Park was a huge achievement for our girls and they battled to the very end of the game, our captain Mia (0-2) was her usual all action self alongside her midfield partner Alana. Juliette made saves that would make Stephen Cluxton jealous and there were huge performances across the defence of Sarah, Lucy, Caoimhe, Issy, Ríodhna and Grace. Up front the girls battled hard as well, with standout performances from Catherine, Ava, Lucy, Saorla, Daisy and Sophie! The biggest cheer of the day came when substitute Thea stuck her powerful shot into the top corner of the net! All of our girls got to experience playing in Croke Park, including Anna, Aisling, Ailsa, Emily, Thuy, Elaine and Lauren! A notable absentee was Jetta, who made a great impression on her debut in the semi final.
A big thanks to the vocal support from St. Mary's parents, teachers and students that cheered the girls on throughout the game and in many cases throughout the year! It was a huge factor in ensuring that our girls came out of every game smiling.
Due to a bereavement, today's scheduled semi-final vs Glasnevin has been postponed until Wednesday 17th of October. The game will still be at 3pm in Cabra. The bus will leave Milltown at 2pm and return at approximately 4:30pm.
5th and 6th
Our girls had a massive win in their quarter final replay in Tallaght yesterday!
In what could only be described as bizarre weather conditions, our girls put in the performance of their lives to emerge victorious. Captain Mia managed to secure a strong wind advantage in the first half and the girls made good use of it, scoring 2-3 without reply. It could have been more if Sophie's incredible goal had not been ruled out for a foul on a Fettercairn player. We were prepared for a second half onslaught due to Fettercairn having the insane wind advantage however St. Mary's managed to dominate possession and their superb work-rate ensured that we only conceded 1-1 against the wind, resulting in an end score of 1-1 to 2-3.
A great showing from our stand-in goalkeeper Catherine had a huge help in securing the win, and she was helped by defensive brilliance from Lucy, Caoimhe, Sarah, Issy, Grace and Ríodhna. Our midfielders Mia (1-1) and Alanah (1-0) made huge contributions and lead the team throughout he game. Our forwards' possession play was crucial, and this was aided by the work ethic of Daisy, Ava (0-1), Saorla, Sophie (0-1), Lucy and Aisling.
This result means that we have qualified for a semi-final vs Glasnevin ET. This game will take place on Monday the 15th of October in The Bogies in Cabra. A bus will be organised for this game and it is provisionally fixed for a 3pm throw in, I will let you know if there are any changes to times or venue but, as of this moment, the bus will be leaving @2pm and should arrive back in Milltown for approximately 4:30pm.
All Girls (4th, 5th, 6th)
Training will take place @2:30pm on Thursday 11th October in Milltown.
The boys were unlucky to lose out in extra time in their quarter final on Monday.
There were epic performances all around the park for the boys, with goals from Zach (2), Max, Glen and Cian all putting us in a great position to win, unfortunately a last- minute extra-time goal foiled the boys' dreams of a semi final!
Training will continue next week after school on Thursday the 18th of October but there is no training for boys this week.
In a topsy turvy week for our GAA club, it seems we are no farther in the competition than we were this time last week!
That's still a positive though as we are still in them!
5th and 6th
A draw for the girls during the week, thanks to a superb performance in Dartry Park, means that we have to do it all again in a replay next week! The team consisted of our brave shot-stopper Juliette in goal, a solid defence of Lucy, Caoimhe, Sarah, Issy, Ríodhna and Grace, two engines in midfield of Alanah (0-1) and Mia (0-3) and some razor sharp forwards in Saorla (1-0), Ava, Daisy, Catherine, Lucy (1-0) and Sophie (1-0).
