Antarctica and Tom Crean
This month in fifth class we have been learning about Antarctica and Tom Crean. We completed projects on Antarctica, Tom Crean and global warming, through which we learnt a lot about Tom Crean and how his amazing achievements. We read a novel about this man called Ice Man by Michael Smith and we completed a book review on it. We completed many creative writing activities on this topic. We learnt about how hard it is to survive in Antarctica and about the effect global warming is having on this continent. We also learned about heat conductors in science. Additionally, we wrote diary entries about Tom Crean and how he must have felt on his first night on the Discovery. In art, we created a polar landscape using chalk pastels.
Junior Entrepreneur Programme
This month we started the Junior Entrepreneur Programme. We learnt what an entrepreneur is and the skills you need to be an entrepreneur. We researched some entrepreneurs and the companies they have set up. We then identified the skills and strengths we all have through our Helping Hands activity. We are a very talented class! Over the coming month we will be presenting our business ideas to a panel of judges like they do in “Dragon’s Den”. We are all very excited! The ideas we will be presenting are personalised pencil cases, a class movie, tie dye t-shirts, schools hat, wristbands and money boxes! Here are our groups working together on their ideas.
Gach mí sa bhliain, bíonn seans ag gach páiste sa rang páirt a ghlacadh i drama beag chun ár dteanga dhúchais a úsáid. An t-aimn a bhí ar an drama an mhí seo na “Seó Faisean”. Bímid ag féachaint, ag éisteacht, ag caint agus ar ndóigh ag foghlaim lena chéile. Bíonn an-spraoi againn!
We celebrated science week at the beginning of November. Aoife’s Dad came to visit 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th classes. He told us all about how he climbed Mount Everest. He showed us many photographs and did some cool experiments with us! Also, we went into sixth class and they shared some really interesting experiments with us. When we visited sixth class, each pair visited over 10 experiments! Afterwards, there was a competition for whoever answered as many questions as possible and those who had the most correct answers won a prize!
National Children’s Choir
This year 4th and 5th class are members of the National Children’s Choir. We have been busy practising our repertoire of songs throughout November. On the 16th of November three other schools visited St. Mary’s and we had our first cluster practice for the NCC. We really enjoyed singing together and of course meeting the children from the other schools. Here are some pictures from the day!
As Advent has begun we are busy preparing for Christmas. We have learned about the Advent wreath and its significance. We are all very excited about Christmas and have been practising our carols regularly. We are going to be performing at a carol service on the 20th of December!
Our class participated in the MS Readathon this year. We raised a fantastic €854 for this great cause AND we got to read lots of books! It was very educational but also enjoyable!
